Snowman Valentine

I love giving Valentine’s to my children each year. There are 6 of them. I don’t always, and to tell you the truth, it’s only in the last few years I’ve tried, but since I started painting and illustrating in 2016, I’ve enjoyed making things for them. It makes them smile. πŸ™‚

This one, though, was something I did for me. I was inspired by some Christmas decor blocks the boys made me a number of years ago. I pictured it quite differently in my head, but it often works that way, doesn’t it? I painted this in my art journal with no other plans for it.

This is how it turned out.

This past week I thought of it again and wondered if I could digitize it in time for Valentine’s Day this year. Sunday, I set aside another project I am work on right now to play with it and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. And not only is it done in time for me to share it with my children, but it’s in plenty of time to share it with all of you!

Update: I have updated this for 2023 and have it available in my Etsy shop. It’s available as a JPG and as a PNG with transparent background so you can use them as you desire. Print some to give for gifts or to frame for yourself. I also included some small cards to fill the empty space on the page. I love these for inserting in another card, using as a tag on a gift, or even a bookmark.

Oh, and please let me know how you plan to use them! It will make me smile to know that they are a blessing to you!

New Love Snowman Ornament

Confession: I haven’t been painting much since I stopped posting in early 2020. I have, however, been working digitally more and more. (Honestly, it’s just less set up, less time, and less energy to do during this super busy season of life.) And this is what led to my new drawing tablet for my birthday this last year. LOVE!

That’s just the tool I used to create this super cool couple (see what I did there?) I’ve had the pleasure of discipling a young lady in our church during the last year and I wanted to do something special for her Christmas gift. She wasn’t quite engaged, but she is now. I didn’t want to use something so cuddly as my Let’s get cozy snowcouple, so I settled with a “new love” ornament. I stayed with my personal snowman style and I’m really happy with how it turned out.

In staying with my recent trend, I forgot to take any pictures of the finished product. (Eyeroll) Thankfully, she took a picture of it and graciously shared it with me. πŸ™‚

I printed it on card stock, sprayed it with a clear sealer for waterproofing and brushed it with a sparkle glaze. Then I put it in a simple frame that I painted a light green and again with the same sparkle glaze. (She loves glitter!) It was so cute! She said that next year this will be the first ornament she hangs. πŸ™‚

Did you make any Christmas gifts this year? What was your favorite?

Winter Shelf Decor

I’ve been sick since Wednesday last week. I think that makes today day 6. The first couple days I slept a lot, but since then I’ve had energy enough for using my computer on the couch. This has led to garden planning, illustrating, homeschool stuff, and even some blogging. Yey! I have nearly 2 years worth of stuff to share, so I’ve written up some posts to share with you. (No, I haven’t done all of them!) For now I’m scheduling them out one per week. I know when I’m back to full energy, I won’t have as much time on my hands, so I’m spreading things out to be more sustainable. πŸ™‚

Today I want to share my winter shelf decor, so I’m slipping it in as an extra post. It’s a simple, one pic kind of post. I’m loving black and white buffalo check these days, so last January I added some black and white winter decoration to my collection. I also changed out the ribbon on that jar of “snowballs” for black and white check.

Christmas Market 2021

Yes, I’m running behind. But since I struggle just to get here at all, I’ll do what I can. Just because I’m not posting, doesn’t mean I’m not doing… in fact, it’s probably because of all I’m “doing” that I rarely get around to post.

All that to say… here are some pics of this year’s Christmas Market. The kids and I participate in it together and my mom comes to help. Sometimes that means we work together on projects, sometimes that just means we all contribute our own work and sell at the same table. This year my three oldest and I sold. The kids use the money they make from the market to help pay for summer camp. I used mine to by my husband a Christmas gift. πŸ™‚

We had a number of ornaments this year. Some were from past years and a handful were new.

My 11 year old son and I made these extra-mini book stack ornaments. They turned out so cute!! In the tree pic above you may be able to see the “Hot Cocoa” and “Candy Cane” versions too.

As far as book stacks go, we also made this cute regular mini sized book stack. I used dowels for the mini-marshmallows on top. This sold almost immediately. We’ll be making more next year! πŸ™‚

My oldest son (15yo) and I did these big books as well. I’m just loving these book stacks! We’ll be making some spring versions for sure!

You can also see some of the garlands and rolling pins I did. And the snowman salt and pepper shakers. We gave them an upgrade from last year, replacing the burlap with black and white check. I love them! 13yo DD made them a couple years ago.

This shot is more of my tiered tray. There are so many cute things in here. My mini “home brewed” coffee sign, a couple more bead garlands and more rolling pins.

Here are a few more snowman signs like I shared last weekend. I just love the square one. When I get around to making my own, I’ll do it that way.

I expanded on the mugs I sold this year. In addition to the ones I made last year, I also had some printed with original artwork. I forgot to take close ups of the mugs, but one is my snowmama and kid hugging. It says “I love my snowmama”. Another mug has an illustration of mistletoe on it and says “In this house we do mistletoe.” The last design is my “home brewed, served always” coffee print. I didn’t sell enough to break even on those this year, but they were fun to include and hopefully more will sell next year.

It was our best year so far and we had such a fun time doing it. I hope you enjoyed seeing some of what we did this year!

I’ve been away for a while. I know. When deadlines start to stack up, something’s got to give. I admitted up front that painting is what I do in my spare time… when I have some. And when I don’t, there certainly isn’t time to blog… not to mention nothing to blog about! πŸ™‚

One of the things keeping me busy is a quilt that I’m making for my 5 year old son’s 6th birthday (next week). It’s still not done, but it’s closer. πŸ™‚ On top of that, Christmas market was inching nearer. All my *extra* energy was going to those projects during the day and late into the night. No painting… no blogging. No problem!

But this past weekend was Christmas Market at our church. We took a lot of time the last few weeks working on the children’s projects. They turned out really well.

The small trees on the table were made from lath that came out of our walls during renovation. The blocks are cut from scrap 2x4s my husband used when re-building the walls.

You may notice in the first pictures, that the “J” is missing. Those first couple pictures were taken the night we set up (since the window makes day pictures near impossible) and we had already gathered up all the “J”s to take back home and fix. This is a new project we did this year and I’m especially attached to it because I drew out the letters and the manger shape myself (instead of using the Cricut). When I showed the J-O-Y to my husband, he said we should add “bundle of” to it. After some brainstorming, I thought that little star would be cute! Sadly, they didn’t sell this year, but they could next year, so I tucked them away.

My boys made these cute trees from the old living room floor my husband pulled up in September.

I’ve sold a few things here and there in past years, but this year I prepared a bunch. These are some of the cards I made. They are original paintings done in watercolor. The plastic bags I have them in made them hard to photograph. πŸ™‚

I also turned some of my past art into notepads. They were a labor of love using this tutorial to bind them.

And those little framed guys in the tiered tray were mine as well. I promised myself I’d have better pictures than I have… but alas. I’ll have to pull the ones I have left out to photograph them for you before putting them in the attic.

Attendance was up this year and we did pretty good. All the money the kids make goes toward summer camp and any that I make goes into the “braces fund.” Any little bit helps! πŸ™‚ The Christmas Market takes a lot of work to prepare for, but it’s something I really enjoy doing. πŸ™‚ And it’s really encouraging to me to find that, not only do people like the art I’ve created, but, they are willing to spend money on it too. πŸ™‚

Custom Chocolate Wrappers – Cozy Mountain Lodge Woman’s Retreat

When I invited myself onto the committee for last year’s women’s retreat, I really wanted chocolates on everyone’s pillow. Alas, we were in a hotel and, though there was plenty of chocolate at the Hershey Lodge and even in the rooms, I didn’t get to be a part of it. This year will be different!

DIY Chocolate Wrappers - Cozy Mountain Lodge Woman's Retreat

For this year’s retreat, we are at a retreat center in the mountains and I’m so excited. The space is homier and easier to decorate than a hotel conference room, we can bring our own food in, and I have access to all those lovely pillows before the ladies arrive! I’m so excited!

DIY Chocolate Wrappers - Cozy Mountain Lodge Woman's Retreat

So earlier this week I made up these cute custom chocolate wrappers for the Hershey’s Minitures I bought. The wrappers are approximately 1.25 inches x 3 inches and I used tape to attach them. I used scrapbook paper, but anything would work.

Then I cut out a whole bunch of little papers and hand drew the labels. Yes, there was probably an easier way, but with my husband using the computer and my time constraints, it was actually faster to hand draw them. But I actually love the hand drawn look!! I used a glue stick to attach them to each chocolate after the candies had been wrapped with scrapbook paper.

DIY Chocolate Wrappers - Cozy Mountain Lodge Woman's Retreat

I’ll be sneaking into all the rooms during set up to place these on each lady’s pillow and saying a prayer for each one’s weekend.

So, now I have a question for you. The illustrations were super simple to do and many of you can probably figure out how I did them just by looking, but I’m curious… would anyone be interested in a video tutorial on how to do the simple illustrations I included on these labels? If there is enough interest, I will try to make time for it in the coming weeks.

Keep in step with the Spirit – Decor with a Message

Get going... in step with the Spirit - Galatians 5:25

Our retreat theme is Cozy Mountain Lodge, so I’m trying to keep in the attitude of mountains and outdoors and all. But I’m also trying to tie it back to the God who made it all and to His Word and it’s application in our lives.

So here I have the attitude of hiking in the mountains (at least it’s what I was going for) with Galatians 5:25: “Keep in step with the Spirit.”

Get going... in step with the Spirit - Galatians 5:25

This passage is one that has become dear to me. Galatians 5:24 and verse 25.

“And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also
keep in step with the Spirit.”

You see, I have a struggle with sin. Anyone else?

These days, among others, I’m struggling with gluttony and self control. But these verses were both convicting and encouraging to me when I came across them in my reading some time ago (not that I am done struggling with this self gratification thing). If I belong to Christ (and I do), my flesh has been crucified with its passions and desires. That not only means that I should be making better decisions, but that those passions and desires have already been put to death.

Yet, we so often live with them unchecked. That’s is where verse 25 is so great! “If we live by the faith…”, that’s what we do when we choose faith in Jesus Christ for forgiveness from our sins, then “let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

This part means that we should be making decision that keep us walking in the Spirit (talking to Him regularly, reading his Word, memorizing it and meditating on it.) When we do this, the other things (our desires and passions) seem to “keep in step” with Him too.

Have you ever spent time meditating on these verses?

Born for Adventure – Nursery Art

A couple months ago, my girls and I were blessed to attend a baby shower for a gal who grew up in our church. I asked the grandmother-to-be what the nursery theme was going to be for the coming baby boy and what she told me made me laugh. Apparently, it depended who you asked.

Mom-to-be said “outdoors”, dad-to-be said “airplanes”.

“But,” she continued, “the general consensus is ‘adventure’.”

Adventure I can do, I thought.

Before I designed my Born for Adventure Hot Air Balloons, I’d been working on the same idea with mountains. And trees. And a river that comes out from between them. Sound familiar?

Why, yes, that is exactly what the above painting looks like. I already had the sketch, I just finished it up, transferred it to watercolor paper, added the watercolor and the verse. And it was done!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I found out about this shower 1 week before it. It was sure handy that I already had the design worked out, or I may not have had anything hand painted to bring. And that would have been super sad! πŸ™‚

Snowman Valentine’s

I sketched out these little cuties last fall, but they never came to be until now.  I dreamed them up with Christmas in mind, but I just love how perfect they are for Valentine’s Day!  At least here in snow country.  They may not have been fully appropriate where I grew up in southern California where we only ever saw snow on the ground one time in my entire childhood.  But here… here we have snow.  Not today of course.  Today we have mud.

Sorry, back to the point!  Snowman Valentines!

Mother and Child Snowman Valentine Card
Mama Love

If I can pull it off, I want to scan and print out 6 of these mama love cards to give my 6 sweethearts tomorrow.  I thought about putting the words “My mama heart loves you” or “Mama love” or something else specifically “mama-ish”.  But I’m glad I didn’t.  This way it can be used differently… like from a daughter to a mama for instance… or grandparent or auntie or whatever.  Lady to child… or child to lady, you fill in the blank. πŸ™‚  Maybe I can even get them in my shop for next year.  Who knows!

Romantic Snowmen "Let's Get Cozy!" Valentine Card
Let’s get cozy!

I just love this one.  I designed it first.  Something about snow people getting cozy just makes me laugh.  Maybe it’s the sharp ice crystals or the thought of the wet cold.  πŸ™‚  But these two just make me smile.  It’s definitely the message I’m sending this year. πŸ™‚  I’ll be giving this one to my sweet husband! πŸ™‚

How about you?  Did you make your own Valentines this year?  Leave a link in the comments… I’d love to see them! πŸ™‚

Update 12/2023:Β  I have the sweet snow mama valentines in my shop and the text is customizable to suit you! I’m hoping to get the cuddling snowmen in soon!
