Be Transformed Sign for Spring/Easter Decorating

A couple years ago I painted this in my art journal.

A few weeks ago I brought that painting into Illustrator and created a wall hanging for the International Women’s Day Spoonflower Design Challenge.

This weekend I added it to my Etsy shop as a digital download.

I love this verse in the Bible. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 This art print is a cute way to be reminded throughout the day that we are not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by renewing our minds with God’s Word.

I’ve offering this print at 33% off for my blog readers for the next week. Enter coupon code TRANSFORMED33.

Snowman Verse for Valentine’s Decor

Snowman Verse Art - Joshua 23:11 | mamasbrush #snowman #verseart #Bibleverse #valentinesdecor #valentinesbibleverse #februarydecor

It all started with a toothbrush holder… a broken toothbrush holder. We’ve been gimping along for weeks (months?) with this thing. Usually toothbrushes are everywhere (remember, there are 8 of us!) and today when I knocked a bunch onto the floor I decided to revamp our situation.

I ripped the broken toothbrush holder off the wall. Unfortunately, I actually did rip it off… and some of the wall with it. Ugh. I wasn’t mad, I just wasn’t careful. Sigh. The bathroom is bound for a remodel shortly anyway, but still, this look was taking us in the wrong direction. I needed something to cover this up.

Enter “Valentine’s” Bible verse. 🙂 I had already illustrated the cute snowman with the snowflakes for another project, so I just grabbed him and added some hearts (from yet another project).

To be completely honest, the verse print was one I was creating for the upcoming women’s retreat I’m decorating for. I just switched out the artwork and made a couple tweaks.

Perfect solution to covering a couple bad spots on the bathroom wall!

Please pin this if you like it…

Apples – Pick Your Own Fall Sign | Hand Lettered and Painted Free Printable

I love love love these printable signs I found over at Clean and Scentsible! I pinned my favorites here. (And that towel… you’ll have to go look. It’s too cute!)

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I tend to steer toward the farmhouse style decor… at least on Pinterest, and these cute signs planted a seed in me to make my own version of them. I just couldn’t let many days go by before I just had to try it with an apple theme. I generally decorate with apples in September. It’s not quite fall, but I’m itching for it to be… apples seem to be a happy medium before my leaves and pumpkins come out at the end of the month.

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I started by sketching this one out. It’s not a “no-sketch” by any means. There were too many elements to get just right. I suppose if you wanted to “no-sketch” it, you could always scan each element in individually and put it together in Photoshop… but I didn’t do that this time. 🙂

I love the look of all the farmhouse signs I see, but when it comes time to buy or make one for myself, I can’t make myself do it. Something always seems to be missing. First of all, I wanted to add a verse to it somehow, but I also wanted to make it more personal. I felt like putting “family farm” at the top fit us better since that’s what we pretend to be. Then I loved how “pick your own” fit the attitude of encouraging the children to help out and take initiative.

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I tried a new watercolor paper this time around. Hot pressed. It’s much smoother and [hopefully] easier to scan and clean up in Photoshop for you all. Shayda recently did a video that talks about the differences in watercolor paper, so I was ready for it to be different. It definitely was different, and it will take some practice, but I think it worked out nicely. Nothing you should be afraid to try for sure. The main reason I decided to try it is that Eileen at My Creative Resolution mentioned in a post (no idea which one… sorry!) that the texture of watercolor paper is hard on artist pens. It was at that moment I understood why my pens never seem to last long! 🙂 An ah-ha moment to be sure! The smooth finish of the hot pressed paper should help them to last longer. And it does scan much nicer!

I know there are already so many fall printables out there, but I don’t often see these seasonal printables with Bible verses on them, so I want to share them with you in the off chance that any of you are still in the market for a cute apple themed fall printable or have been holding out for one with a verse. 100 Posts and What to do when you Mess up

A Simple Valentine's Breakfast

I haven’t been watching for this, but the other day I stumbled on the fact that I had posted 99 posts so far. That makes this one #100. I thought maybe I’d do something special to celebrate (because I’m all about celebrating small things to keep life interesting), but, like Valentine’s this year (Happy Valentine’s Day by the way!), sometimes life dictates that we keep things simple. Instead of some big plan, this year we are putting heart sprinkles on cinnamon rolls out of a tube and eating heart shaped bacon for breakfast… done. Valentine’s Day celebrated.

Likewise, keeping “100 posts” simple… Thanks for joining me for 100 posts!! There. We celebrated! (I don’t know how to find my top posts anyway.)

February Art Journal Week 2

On an artsy note, I wanted to share this weeks February prompts. I’m still using the February Prompts from Awesome Alice. I’ll admit, this week was harder for me. And I wasn’t as happy with them as last week. Some more than others. But God rarely uses the perfect things in this world.

February Art Journal Week 2 - I am the Lord
Prompt: One of a Kind
Love Letters - February Art Journal Week 2
Prompt: Love letters
February Art Journal Week 2 - Conversation Hearts
Prompt: Candy

This is a great example of things not going according to plan. I had already filled in several of the hearts when I got pulled away. When I returned and started back at the lettering, I had the black pen in my hand instead of the red. Oops. I had a few choices… tear out the page and start over, give up the whole thing, or leave it as a demonstration that I’m not perfect and that we can press on even when things don’t go our way.

I picked that one. 🙂 I’m not perfect, but Jesus redeemed me. Hopefully He will still use my artwork… even when it’s not perfect (because it rarely is.)

You and Me - February Art Journal Week 2
Prompt: You and Me
Hopelessly in Love - February Art Journal Week 2
Prompt: Hopelessly in Love
Hugs and Kisses - February Art Journal Week 2
Prompt: Hugs and Kisses
Happy Valentine's Day - February Art Journal Week 2
Prompt: Happy Valentine’s Day

Like I said, these aren’t perfect. I was tempted to get frustrated and embarrassed, and even to keep them to myself. But in the end, I knew I wanted to share them with you. Because God loves to use the imperfect to bring Himself glory. And I hope He is glorified in these!

It’s true for you too, you can be used by God, no matter how flawed you are, if you surrender yourself to Him! 🙂

Get Away to the Mountains – Women’s Retreat Decor

Another in the line up of women’s retreat decor. I love the play on words that this one holds. It sound so rude, doesn’t it. Get Away! Like it’s being yelled. But then, too, it has the “get away to the mountains” feel to it. But my favorite is the verse at the bottom:

“Jesus went out to the mountain to pray.”
Luke 6:12

One of the things I am most looking forward to about this women’s retreat is the chance to “Get Away”. There are 6 little people at home with me all day, every day. And I love them. And I love that we are here every day together. But… I love a chance to get alone with God and spend some real, uninterrupted time with him.

And that is what I hope this piece reminds the ladies of. To take some time away from sessions and games and fellowship and just get away by themselves in much the same way that Jesus did here.

Born for Adventure – Nursery Art

A couple months ago, my girls and I were blessed to attend a baby shower for a gal who grew up in our church. I asked the grandmother-to-be what the nursery theme was going to be for the coming baby boy and what she told me made me laugh. Apparently, it depended who you asked.

Mom-to-be said “outdoors”, dad-to-be said “airplanes”.

“But,” she continued, “the general consensus is ‘adventure’.”

Adventure I can do, I thought.

Before I designed my Born for Adventure Hot Air Balloons, I’d been working on the same idea with mountains. And trees. And a river that comes out from between them. Sound familiar?

Why, yes, that is exactly what the above painting looks like. I already had the sketch, I just finished it up, transferred it to watercolor paper, added the watercolor and the verse. And it was done!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I found out about this shower 1 week before it. It was sure handy that I already had the design worked out, or I may not have had anything hand painted to bring. And that would have been super sad! 🙂

Cozy Mountain Lodge Art

God's Got This - Hand Lettered Artwork - Joshua 1:9

Last year I invited myself onto the women’s retreat planning committee and appointed myself the decorating coordinator. (Then I appointed my mom as my helper, but that is another story for another day.) Last year our theme was “Sweet Life Cafe” with all it’s sweets and coffee loveliness. I had fun painting and hand lettering all sorts of fun cafe themed artwork.

This year, the leadership for the retreat changed and it was even easier for me to force my way into the best committee role there is. I’m so glad that all the other ladies have adverse reactions the idea of decorating such an event. It works out in my favor!

God's Got This - Hand Lettered Artwork - Joshua 1:9

This year’s theme is Cozy Mountain Lodge from Group. Now that Christmas is over, I’ve officially begun working on it. This is the first of the artwork I have planned. I love taking something mainstream and tweaking it.

I’m picturing this on a food table or as part of the centerpiece. We’ll see when we get there.

Seek Him – Watercolor on Wood

Seek Him - Matthew 2:2 - Watercolor Illustration on Wood

Here is a bit of Christmas I haven’t shared here yet.

I love this piece.  I love the way it turned out.  I love the message.  I love the fact that it is wood and stands alone… aka doesn’t need a frame.  I made it for last year’s Christmas Market (2017) and it sold, so one of these days I’m going to make myself another one.  Because I love it!  But it sold to dear friends, so I’m glad they have it.  They attached some ribbon and hung it on their door.  That makes me smile. 🙂

He is the God of Hope – Illustrated Verse Romans 15:13

The God of Hope Illustrated Verse - Romans 15:13

I mentioned that I had the opportunity to pray with a couple ladies a couple Sundays ago and it was a beautiful morning.

The service ended and everyone started to bustle around.  We gathered our things and I looked around at the people passing by.  Then a lady I haven’t talked to in many months came walking by.

A small hug. Some chit chat. Then the question, “How are you guys?”  Her answer was real.

“We’re doing okay,” she said with a little hesitation that told me “okay” was coming only by God’s grace.  Then, “but it’s been hard.  We’ve been going through some hurtful things.”

I didn’t know.  I still don’t.  But I asked her if I could pray with her right there, standing in the middle of the sanctuary with people buzzing around us.  And she said yes.

I prayed.  She cried.  And I knew I’d obeyed God’s call on my heart to minister to His people that morning.

The God of Hope Illustrated Verse - Romans 15:13

When the time came to design a card for her, I chose Romans 15:13.  He is the God of hope who is able to fill you with all joy and peace… no matter the season or trials you are walking through!

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing

so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

Ask God for Wisdom – Illustrated Verse James 1:5

Spring Chick Illustrated Verse - James 1:5

Some Sunday afternoons, while we are driving home from church, I reflect back over the morning and realize that I didn’t have any truly meaningful conversations.  Oh, we may talk homeschooling or child raising or gardening and chicken raising, people may even be encourage, but too often nothing spiritual comes into it.  And it’s church!

My hearts desire is to talk about what we are learning in the Bible or to get down to the real story of where people are and to pray with them.  I was so excited last weekend to have, not just one of these conversations, but two of them!

A couple days later as I was continuing to pray for two different ladies I got to pray with, I decided that I really wanted to make a card for each of them.

This card is for a friend who is struggling in a new phase of parenting.  I chose the chick for spring (not because it matches the message), but the verse is the only one I could think to encourage because it’s one I need everyday!  I make thousands of decisions everyday, some are completely insignificant, but for others I stand clueless.  I lack wisdom!

“If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5

The answer is right there… don’t jump online to find the answers to the latest problem.  Ask God!

Spring Chick Illustrated Verse - James 1:5

A few notes on the illustration:

First off, this is one of the first illustrations I have done straight from my head.  Most of the time I begin an illustration with an inspiration photo.  Often I have seen someone else’s illustration and I want to imitate it or, more often, tweak it to make it my own.  Other times, I have an idea I want to create, but I go in search of another artists version or even a photograph to draw from.  Those are fine tools to use, especially as you learn.  Don’t get me wrong!  But it was supper fun to see this little guy, just as he is, in my head and to sketch him out on graph paper (yep, I start everything on graph paper… it helps with symmetry and sizing.)

After the whole thing was painted and dry, I took out my artist pens to add the finishing touches.  That is such a scary moment.  Adding the pen lines to an illustration has the power to take it over the top, or completely ruin it.  This time…

img_3423-1

I gave him chicken pox!

It was horrible.

At first, I decided I’d just give it anyway.  No big deal.  It didn’t have to be perfect to be appreciated.  24 hours later I was ready to start it over.  Then this afternoon I had a few minutes to take pics to share with you and I had an idea.

More feathers!

Spring Chick Illustrated Verse - James 1:5

I was going to trash it anyway, so what did it matter if it didn’t work.  But it did and I’m so glad.  So… lesson?  Sometimes you can add too much with the pen.  But when that happens, sometimes you can add even more and fix everything. 🙂
