Late Summer Sunflower Shelf Decor

This is late being posted. I was sick for most of August, so now, with just over a day left in the month, I wanted to share what my kitchen shelves have looked like all month.

Thankfully, for most of this sickness, I was not down completely. On my good days I had time and energy for a few extras like changing the decor from patriotic to sunflowers. I don’t have many spaces in the house I can decorate (long term renovation and many unfinished spaces all over the house), so it doesn’t take long.

Unfortunately, blogging was the last thing on my mind. I haven’t done much on Pinterest or Etsy either. How thankful I am that these sorts of things wait in the wings when real life gets hard to do.

Some details:

Top Shelf: The votive is an old recycled candle jar I added a candle to and tied some ribbon on (my 14 year old daughter’s idea.) The herb sign I made for women’s retreat this year. Wood bead garland I made last winter (there is a snowflake on the other side of the sign). Sunflower is from Hobby Lobby, removed from it’s stem.

Bottom Shelf: Greens from Hobby Lobby, purchased a couple years ago. Love it and use it all the time all over the house. I’m thinking about getting another. It’s very versatile. The house is a 2×6 cut into shape, painted black and modge podge buffalo check scrapbook paper on it. The kids and I made them last year (also in my winter shelf post). The bird and pedestal are from Hobby Lobby (noticing a trend?). The truck wasn’t originally on the shelf, but a couple weeks ago my mom picked it up at the Dollar Tree for me and my 12 year old son put it up there. The negative space that was there before was nice, but I like the truck too, and he was just too delighted with his decorating for me to take it down.

On the counter: The sunflower bowl was a gift for my birthday last year. I love it! We painted the jar with grey chalk paint for a bridal shower a a year or so ago. We made several for the tables and gifted one of them to the bride (it was just like one on her registry). I got the other two! 🙂 The flowers in it were also from Hobby Lobby. The plates are too cute to put in the cabinet. They were part of a gift basket from my husband’s boss last Christmas (more for me than for him I’m sure!) and are from, you guessed it… Hobby Lobby. I took all the junk that usually sits here off the counter so that it could be cute for a change and am guarding the space for the most part. It makes me smile!

What space is making you smile these days? Leave a comment and let me know! Leave a link so we can see if you have a pic online somewhere! 🙂

A Snowman Sign for Winter Decorating

Happy New Year to you all and, even better, happy January!

My daughter and I have been switching our home from Christmas to winter decor these past couple days. I love to bring out all my snowmen for January. That’s when I was reminded that I didn’t save any of these sweet snowmen for myself. I made and sold a handful of them at our Christmas Market this year (I’ll share that one of these days I hope) and another handful as Christmas gifts. I planned to keep one of them for myself, but another gift was needed and it fit the friend perfectly. I’m hoping to make a few more this month while I can still put one out. 🙂 We’ll see how that goes. 🙂

The design started in watercolor and pen several years ago when I first began painting as a Christmas card I designed for my mom to send out. I’ve been fine tuning my snowmen since. A couple years ago I made one on wood for my mom. It was a beginners attempt, but it was cute. This year I decided to update it for Market and I was thrilled with how they turned out.

I’ll be making more for next year… and one of these square ones for myself.

Do you have any new winter decorations you’ve found or made?

Blessings,

Panda Party on a Budget

When I found out that pandas were going to be my theme for this family party, I was super excited. There is so much cute stuff out there for pandas. This is my take on it.

We had the pleasure to throw a family birthday party for a girl we consider part of our family. She’s one of ours and her mom’s okay with that. They always join us Sunday evenings for our family movie night, but tonight, we added in a surprise birthday party for this newly 13 year old.

Now, for those of you who have been around a while, or who have looked through some of my other parties, you know that we do parties a little differently. I have 6 kids, with my mom and sister joining us, already, we are 10 people! So we don’t do guest lists and I try to keep things pretty simple in the way of activities. We do food, decorations, presents and cake (or pie or whatever the birthday person requests). We also don’t do expensive. I do 6-8 parties a year. I can’t do that times $100+. I just can’t! All I bought for this party was some Pirouette Wafer cookies and paper plates and cups. Everything else was done with what I already had or free printables.

So… pandas. I found some really cute ideas on Pinterest (see my Panda party board here!)

Crafty Pammy has this really great free printable panda craft that I cut out and did with my older boys. Mine is on the bottom. They came up with the idea of actually having the pandas eating bamboo. In another party setting, this would have been a fun craft to let your little guests do, but since my birthday girl was 13, I just used them for decorations.

My pinspiration for the bamboo came from Super Festa Infantil where they have all sorts of panda party ideas. It looks like theirs is pre-printed or something, but I just cut green construction paper into 3 inch strips and then trimmed them up to have the little details at the ends of the segments. Then I taped them to the wall (with special wall tape my father-in-law picked up for me) on top of each other and added stems and leaves. The stems are actually scraps from cutting those out. Then tuck in the pandas and we were all set.

And of course my chalkboard made an appearance. I was just going to do the bamboo since I was running out of time, but at the last minute I fit in a little panda. I just love him!

The cupcakes were inspired by this adorable cake.

And I got the cup idea here. Those are for sale, but a sharpie and white party cups got the job done for me. 🙂

Done miss the other ideas I didn’t use over at my Pinterest Board! And don’t forget to…
