Snowman Verse for Valentine’s Decor

Snowman Verse Art - Joshua 23:11 | mamasbrush #snowman #verseart #Bibleverse #valentinesdecor #valentinesbibleverse #februarydecor

It all started with a toothbrush holder… a broken toothbrush holder. We’ve been gimping along for weeks (months?) with this thing. Usually toothbrushes are everywhere (remember, there are 8 of us!) and today when I knocked a bunch onto the floor I decided to revamp our situation.

I ripped the broken toothbrush holder off the wall. Unfortunately, I actually did rip it off… and some of the wall with it. Ugh. I wasn’t mad, I just wasn’t careful. Sigh. The bathroom is bound for a remodel shortly anyway, but still, this look was taking us in the wrong direction. I needed something to cover this up.

Enter “Valentine’s” Bible verse. 🙂 I had already illustrated the cute snowman with the snowflakes for another project, so I just grabbed him and added some hearts (from yet another project).

To be completely honest, the verse print was one I was creating for the upcoming women’s retreat I’m decorating for. I just switched out the artwork and made a couple tweaks.

Perfect solution to covering a couple bad spots on the bathroom wall!

Merry Christmas – Shelves

Merry Christmas - Shelves | mamasbrush #shelves #shelfdecor #Christmas #gingerbread #beadgarland #decor #holiday

December has just rushed by! I was starting to feel kinda lame about all the things I didn’t get done in time for Christmas this year, but then I was reminded of all the things that did happen this month and I’m feeling a little better. There was a lot in this month that I don’t usually take on. It’s a wonder anything happened at all. 🙂

One of the things I hoped to do this month was share a couple more posts, so here is at least one of them. I just love these shelves that my husband made me. They are made from beams he removed from our 1900 home. Yes, those are 120 year old nail holes in the sides where the lath was attached. Aren’t they beautiful? And that’s not stain you see on there. That’s the actual color of the wood! I love them!

I also love that they give me a fun place in my kitchen to decorate seasonally. (You can see other ways I’ve decorated them in the past.) This is how I did it this month!

Merry Christmas - Shelves | mamasbrush #shelves #shelfdecor #Christmas #gingerbread #beadgarland #decor #holiday

On the shelves: Gingerbread man and lady salt and pepper shakers were a gift (split over both shelves), Top shelf: wood snowflake was from Hobby Lobby this fall, the “Tree Lot” was something I custom made a few years ago, mini rolling pin was a gift, Bottom Shelf: cookie cutter set and peppermint candy bowl were gifts, red and green bowls were part of a set of 6 different colored bowls I mix and match throughout the year purchased at BJ’s years ago, and the wood bead garland was something I made for Christmas Market this year.

I hope you enjoy December’s shelves, and most of all, that you have a very Merry Christmas! Hope to see you in the new year!

Customize your Rae Dunn for Valentine’s Day

I got my very first piece of Rae Dunn pottery for Christmas this year. I’ve been looking at how to DIY Rae Dunn type things for a while and pinning everything Rae Dunn before that, but now I have one. Trouble is, what can I do with one piece?

I got the “faith” mug. Isn’t it cute??? But when I think Rae Dunn, I think of all the ways I can use it to decorate seasonally. And don’t you need a dozen or more pieces to be able to do that? Actually, no. You don’t!

Last month I shared with you how I used my one Rae Dunn mug in a winter vignette. When February was approaching, though, I took some pictures of the process for you. (Just meant to share them earlier in the month!)

In the pictures above, you see the word “Faith” on the right. It’s a great word, but I was looking for something else for Valentine’s decor. The left picture shows you something else… a blank canvas!

So I grabbed some masking tape and my water based Sharpie paint pen and got to work. (***Note: water based will wash off, oil based may not. Make sure you have the water based paint pen!!!) You could measure, but I just eye-balled the taping to get mostly strait and just far enough apart.

Customize your Rae Dunn | mamasbrush #RaeDunn #mug #diy #tutorial #decor #valentine'sday

Then I used my most Rae Dunn like writing (notice it isn’t the exact same, but it’s good enough for me) and wrote “kiss me” on the cup. If you mess up, just get a paper towel damp and clean it off to start over.

I did notice that it bled when the paint pen touched the tape, so I tried to be careful not to get so close the second time. But even then, I just folded up a paper towel, dipped it in a bit of water and cleaned up the edges after pulling the tape off.

And I was done (or should I say “Dunn”?) Not sure yet what it will say with spring around the corner, but you can be sure it will be something.

Okay, so I wasn’t completely done…

While I still had my supplies out and was still itching to decorate (I don’t have much Valentine stuff) I pulled out a couple of my little white bowls. I stuck a piece of masking tape around the bottom to give me a straight line and I added words to them too.

Winter Shelf Decor and More

Winter Shelf Decor | mamasbrush #decor #winter #pinetrees #snowman #snow
#snowballs #shelves #chalkboard #art #drawing

Okay, so we are in the second half of January and I’ll be changing these {my favorite} shelves in the next week or so. But before I do, I wanted to share them with you all. I didn’t really do anything with them in January last year, so this was their first winter set up.

I just love the way it turned out, but my favorite part is that my daughter (11) was helping me. While I was working on taking everything out of the box, she grabbed up those plastic pine trees and set them up herself. I just loved the way they were set up, so I placed that tall wood snowman among them and called um good. I love that skinny little guy. He is one of the projects from our first year selling at the Christmas market. I believe my oldest made him. The jar of cotton balls is labeled “snowballs”. I put it together for my tiered tray last year.

Behind that is one of my favorite, inexpensive frames from Walmart. I keep various sizes on hand so I can frame a new piece for putting up or gifting. I put a piece of black paper in it and used my white, water-based paint pen to draw a little scene and write out James 1:17.

Winter Shelf Decor | mamasbrush #decor #winter #pinetrees #snowman #snow
#snowballs #shelves #woodblocks #crafts #wintercrafts #wintercrafting #saltandpeppershakers

On the bottom shelf are several wooden trees I’ve gathered or made over the years. The “Snow” blocks were another from my son, but his time they were made just for me instead of left overs from market. He did them in all shades of green because he knew I would want to use them for a winter-scapey theme after Christmas. The adorable snowman salt and pepper shakers were made by my daughter for Christmas market and were among the left overs. I’m just “borrowing” them until next year when we’ll put them out to sell again. 🙂

Rae Dunn Inspired Cocoa Station - Winter Shelf Decor | mamasbrush #decor #marshmellows #cocoa #candycanes #mugs #RaeDunn

I love this little spot on the window sill above my stove. I usually put mugs all along it through Christmas and beyond, but we got a cat last year and I just can’t keep him off that sill. I am too afraid he’ll get up there and knock something down to it’s doom. And let’s be honest, he’s going to get up there. I find cat prints all. the. time.

So this year I made this a little cocoa themed space. I filled a mason jar with large marshmallow and set my cute hot chocolate mix with it. Then the cittle crocheted mug rug my daughter made for me for Christmas this year. Also for Christmas this year, my sister gave me my first official Rae Dunn piece. I’ve been pinning them for a year now. She picked out this cute mug that says “faith” on it. Problem was, as cute as it would be with all those candy canes in it, it just didn’t fit. So I grabbed my black water-based paint pen and wrote “cocoa” on it in my wobbly version of “Rae Dunn” like writing on the other side. Now I have options. I can use it as is, or I can turn it around and write something to fit my theme.

Toilet Paper Snowman - Winter Shelf Decor on a Budget| mamasbrush #decor #snowman #snow #crafty #winter #easycrafts #decor #decorations #toiletpaperrolls

This is my last favorite thing this year. It was also a gift, last year’s Christmas gift from my older boys (12 and 8 at the time). You see, last year was the year of the toilet paper pumpkins at our church. It seemed that every different group made them, but I had no idea. Not until after we made a bunch and took them to the Christmas market hoping to sell a few for Thanksgiving. We didn’t sell any! No worries, put the toilet paper back in the bathroom and fold up the fabric for a future project. But apparently it started the wheels turning for my boys. Before I knew it, and with no idea why, they were begging the next empty oatmeal container off me for a project. That, plus some help and supplies from my mom, became the cutest toilet paper snowman you’ve ever seen! One of my favorite Christmas gifts from 2018!

So there you have it, my favorite parts of this year’s winter decor. I hope you are inspired to make a special place in your home to make you smile!

Fall Harvest Birthday Party My {Young} Children Gave Me

For months my children (ages 4-12) have been dreaming up their birthday plans for me. I always make a big deal of their birthdays (in inexpensive and homemade ways) and they are getting old enough to want to do what I do… for me. It’s pretty cool.

They have help. My mom helps with brainstorming and shopping and any crafting. The day of, they kick me out of the house (I go down to my mom’s house [converted from a detached garage] and take a shower… ahhhh… happy birthday to me!) so they can decorate.

Pumpkin Cake - Fall Harvest Birthday Party My Children Gave Me | mamasbrush | #birthday #party #harvest #fall #cake #sweets #pumpkins

This year they baked a cake. Due to a flop the previous day, I helped the little kids make the cake that morning and the big kids decorated it with my mom in the afternoon when she was home from work. It turned out really cute!

They colored pictures for the walls and put together a centerpiece according to the theme.

This year they even put my chalkboard to use! Isn’t it adorable! They all helped in some way. Keep in mind that the oldest is 12 and the youngest had just turned 4.

Thank you babies for a wonderful birthday!

[Most of this post was finished back at the end of September, but life got busy and the blog (as necessity demands) is the first thing to go. (I haven’t been painting either!) I just popped in to work on some new posts when I discovered that this one had never been finished. So here it is. Hopefully there will be another this week, and they we’ll see how life settles in. I miss sharing… and having things to share!]

Blessings,

A Turtle Themed Birthday on a Budget

Turtle Birthday Theme on a Budget #partyplanning #party #birthday #turtles #diy #cake #chalkboard #breakfast

My baby turned 4 last week. Four! It’s hard to believe. But he loves turtles. Has for a while now. We were supposed to do a turtle theme last year, but it was the week my husband had off to work on the house (and make me shelves), so the kitchen was out of commission. We hung streamers and blew up balloons at my mom’s house instead.

This year was the year of the turtles. I started with my chalkboard (I love my chalkboard!)

Turtle Birthday Theme on a Budget #partyplanning #party #birthday #turtles #diy #cake #chalkboard #breakfast

Breakfast was waffle turtles (Pinspired here, other ideas on my board) and pond water (apple cider). The kids thought the pond water was a mixture of funny and gross. It was perfect. That means they approved!

Turtle Birthday Theme on a Budget #partyplanning #party #birthday #turtles #diy #cake #chalkboard #breakfast

The cake was inspired by one from Cake Adventures. I wasn’t bold enough on my colors and it’s a little messy, but the kids loved it and it wasn’t hard. I didn’t even have to bake the cake in a bowl. I used an 8 inch and a 9 inch cake pan, layered them with ganache in the middle and carved it into shape with a knife.

I rounded out the decor with green streamers, green balloons and green plates. It was the perfect family party (we even had friends over this time). Maybe $10 tops (beyond food/ingredients we already have on hand) for the whole thing and a memory they will cherish for years to come. That’s the important part!

My September Shelves + Other Apple Decor

I decorate with apples in September. Okay, I know I’m a little crazy, but I just can’t bring out the “fall” stuff until it’s officially fall. As in September 23rd this year. Some years I’ll fudge a little and decorate over the weekend before, but most of the time, we do it on the day.

Problem is, by the end of August, I’m generally itching for fall. It’s my favorite season.

A couple years ago I decided that apples would make a fair bridge. They are adorable, and they don’t really match with my leaves and pumpkins (so I usually don’t use them). It’s the perfect solution. Apples in September.

Early Fall Decor | Apples in September

My husband built these shelves for me (out of American Chestnut beams he pulled out of the walls of our house) last September when he took some time off to work on the house. That means this is the first time to decorate them with apples. Most of my apple stuff came from my mom when she moved out here to be with us. Her last kitchen was decorated in apples, so she had plenty and I had my pick.

The hand lettered piece on the left side of the top shelf I created last year. The pie on the bottom shelf is watercolor on a piece of wood I did the year before that. I’d like to do that one over sometime because it smudged a bit when we added the clear finish. But for now, I like it.

Early Fall Decor | Apples in September

Under those shelves on my counter, I put my chalkboard frame (which is really just a white frame from Walmart with a black paper in it. I use white water based paint pen or chalkboard pens on it.) The design was there from my mom’s chocolate themed party, but I changed the words to “apple cider please” to match the apples. I thought the little wood apple was cute here and it all went well with my after meal clean up chart which is there all the time. (I scribbled out the names of my children for privacy.) I’m loving this set up because it mostly blocks the pencil sharpener that lives on the corner of the counter there (for lack of a better place for it). Homeschool families need their pencil sharpeners!

Early Fall Decorating for September

This cute little collection is sitting in the corner of my kitchen by the windows. Old basket with puffy red check fabric, jar, candle, plastic apple and my new favorite apple artwork (available to print… check it out!)

I moved this from the living room early last week when I moved my stack of Pergo out of there to get ready for some renovations coming up.

Early Fall Decorating for September

That’s right, the little “table” it’s sitting on is really a covered stack of flooring waiting to be installed. 🙂 You never do really know what someone’s house looks like based on a blog, do you?

How do you decorate in September??

Easy Chocolate Truffle Artwork – You can do this!

Easy Chocolate Truffle Artwork - You can do this!

Remember that chocolate themed birthday party I threw for my mom? The one I painted the Chocolate Frosted Cupcake for? Yes, the one I haven’t shown you yet. That’s the one! Good memory!

Well, I painted these cute little truffles for that party too. (Pinspiration here.) Again, part gift-part decoration! She actually hung them up already on the wall in her bathroom in little white frames! Yes… it’s adorable!

Easy Chocolate Truffle Artwork - You can do this!

I painted them with watercolor and added the white with Sharpie Paint Pens. Then I added a touch of black with my Faber Castel thin pen to add shadow and make the white pop. It really helped! Super easy!

You could do this with markers too! Just color in the chocolate with brown marker and then use the white paint pen (a couple coats would help!) and add the black lines at the end. (Keep the black on the same side of the white on all the lines so it has a realistic “shadow” look.) I think they would make adorable greeting cards! Let me know if you try!

Easy Chocolate Truffle Artwork - You can do this!

Looking at them now (I always notice details like this when I look at the picture of whatever I painted, not before) I think I would put the swirl one in the middle to make it seem more balanced, but that’s because I have issues with symmetry. What do you think? Would you switch them out to put the swirl in the middle? Or do you like them as is? Let me know in the comments!

Easy Hiking Theme Birthday on a Budget

I wasn’t sure how I was going to make this “Hiking” themed birthday different from the “Camping” theme we did a few years ago, and let me tell you, inspiration was not coming. I had only general ideas going into the evening before the big day, but hopefully that is just proof of how easy and budget friendly this whole theme was.

Birthdays are a big deal around here, and if you’ve been around a while, then you know that there is always a theme. I was really struggling with what the theme would be this time around since the interests of my now nine year old haven’t changed much over the last few years. I’ve done all the themes already. What he really wanted was a hiking theme, but I kept fighting against it since we just did a camping theme a few years ago.

Added into all that, my husband and I spent 10 days during July in the hospital with our oldest daughter and, while she is in full health now, the week we got home was full of recovery and catching up from being away from home and the rest of the kids for so long. That left only a few days to figure out what I was going to do for this birthday.

Finally I gave in. Hiking theme it was… but I had no idea what I would do. Pinterest is always a huge help, but most of the “hiking” searches brought up tons of great “camping” themed party ideas. Or “national park” themes. Still not exactly what I was looking for. (See my Pinterest board for more ideas!)

One thing I did find was cute hiking signs I could print… but my printer wasn’t working at the last minute, so we didn’t have those.

So what’s a girl to do with no balloons, no streamers, and no idea what to start with? I headed upstairs to to the attic for the Christmas/winter decorations. Yes I did! You may recognize some of these from the Cozy Mountain Lodge Women’s Retreat I decorated for earlier this year too.

I put some of these decorations on my much loved shelves.

Adventure Awaits Hand Painted Card -- Easy Hiking Theme Birthday on a Budget

And I try to paint/illustrate a little card for each of the kids on their birthday. It’s become something that is really special to them. This time I thought it fit nicely in the decoration. You could totally do this painting. I painted the green part of the tree loosely, leaving gaps here and there in a light green. After that dried, I did it again with the same paint, but not going all the way to the edges. Then a third time after it dried again. Once it was all dry the fourth time, I added the brown trunk. Sometimes I simply use a tall triangle for a pine tree. It works great!

The mountains I put on a pedestal in the middle of the breakfast table. (Excuse the wrinkled tablecloth… the epitome of last minute.)

Birthday breakfast was cinnamon roll mountains. Super easy! Two cans of cinnamon rolls from the refrigerated section of the grocery store (though you can make your own if you have the time and inclination). I just unrolled each one and re-rolled it in the slightest cone shape. A little tip: don’t go too high with your cone or it will topple over… but I just made that one mine. 🙂 No big deal.

I made little flags out of scrapbook paper and glued “take a hike” circles on to them. The stick is a skewer I cut into three parts. I hand wrote the “take a hike” but you could use something printed off the computer or even stickers if you can find something you like.

Life's An Adventure... Go Hiking! Chalkboard -- Easy Hiking Theme Birthday on a Budget

The chalkboard was really easy to do. Honestly, the hardest part was the lettering. Again, you could even use a simple tall triangle for the tree if the scribbled lines are too much. I found that the orange chalk gave enough of a brown feel over the black of the chalkboard that it worked perfectly.

Hiking Trail Cake -- Easy Hiking Theme Birthday on a Budget

The cake was the most last minute of all. I baked the cake the night before… but I used too high of a temperature and it was dry. So my daughter and I remade it that morning. That afternoon I was assembling my cake unfrozen (freezing them first makes it super easy to assemble and frost!!) and with no real idea of what I wanted to do. None of the 2-3 pins I found were what I wanted/had time for, so I was on my own. The cake has it’s own post! Click over to find out how I made it! 🙂

And that’s how we did our easy hiking theme birthday on a budget! To top it off, we recommended some hiking themed birthday presents to family who were looking for ideas, so the back pack, nature journal and compass really added to the excitement! 🙂

Carrots for Spring

Watercolor Carrots for Spring Decorating by mamasbrush
Watercolor carrots by mamasbrush

I’m super excited about these little cuties. I’m not sure I’ve ever called carrots “cute” before, but I love these. I love the color, the shading, the way they are suspended in air. Are they perfect? No. But they are fun. And that’s my only requirement for being happy with something I’ve created. 🙂

(As an aside: I never pursued my love of drawing when I was younger because I always though everything had to be perfect… what a game changer this new way of thinking is!)

I have plans to frame these little carrots and put them on my little shelves with other fun spring things. I love it so much that I want to make a smaller one for my tiered tray. Hopefully I’ll get pics to share with you when I do.

Oh, and a little teaser…
