A Snowman Sign for Winter Decorating

Snowman Decor | Every good and perfect gift is from above. James 1:17 | mamasbrush #snowman #January #winter #winterdecor #decorations #black and white #buffalocheck #blackandwhitebuffalocheck

Happy New Year to you all and, even better, happy January!

My daughter and I have been switching our home from Christmas to winter decor these past couple days. I love to bring out all my snowmen for January. That’s when I was reminded that I didn’t save any of these sweet snowmen for myself. I made and sold a handful of them at our Christmas Market this year (I’ll share that one of these days I hope) and another handful as Christmas gifts. I planned to keep one of them for myself, but another gift was needed and it fit the friend perfectly. I’m hoping to make a few more this month while I can still put one out. 🙂 We’ll see how that goes. 🙂

The design started in watercolor and pen several years ago when I first began painting as a Christmas card I designed for my mom to send out. I’ve been fine tuning my snowmen since. A couple years ago I made one on wood for my mom. It was a beginners attempt, but it was cute. This year I decided to update it for Market and I was thrilled with how they turned out.

I’ll be making more for next year… and one of these square ones for myself.

Do you have any new winter decorations you’ve found or made?

Blessings,
Babychaser

Apples – Pick Your Own Fall Sign | Hand Lettered and Painted Free Printable

I love love love these printable signs I found over at Clean and Scentsible! I pinned my favorites here. (And that towel… you’ll have to go look. It’s too cute!)

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I tend to steer toward the farmhouse style decor… at least on Pinterest, and these cute signs planted a seed in me to make my own version of them. I just couldn’t let many days go by before I just had to try it with an apple theme. I generally decorate with apples in September. It’s not quite fall, but I’m itching for it to be… apples seem to be a happy medium before my leaves and pumpkins come out at the end of the month.

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I started by sketching this one out. It’s not a “no-sketch” by any means. There were too many elements to get just right. I suppose if you wanted to “no-sketch” it, you could always scan each element in individually and put it together in Photoshop… but I didn’t do that this time. 🙂

I love the look of all the farmhouse signs I see, but when it comes time to buy or make one for myself, I can’t make myself do it. Something always seems to be missing. First of all, I wanted to add a verse to it somehow, but I also wanted to make it more personal. I felt like putting “family farm” at the top fit us better since that’s what we pretend to be. Then I loved how “pick your own” fit the attitude of encouraging the children to help out and take initiative.

I tried a new watercolor paper this time around. Hot pressed. It’s much smoother and [hopefully] easier to scan and clean up in Photoshop for you all. Shayda recently did a video that talks about the differences in watercolor paper, so I was ready for it to be different. It definitely was different, and it will take some practice, but I think it worked out nicely. Nothing you should be afraid to try for sure. The main reason I decided to try it is that Eileen at My Creative Resolution mentioned in a post (no idea which one… sorry!) that the texture of watercolor paper is hard on artist pens. It was at that moment I understood why my pens never seem to last long! 🙂 An ah-ha moment to be sure! The smooth finish of the hot pressed paper should help them to last longer. And it does scan much nicer!

I know there are already so many fall printables out there, but I don’t often see these seasonal printables with Bible verses on them, so I want to share them with you in the off chance that any of you are still in the market for a cute apple themed fall printable or have been holding out for one with a verse. My Creative Process: Hand Lettered Daffodil with 2 Corinthians 5:17

Hand Lettered Daffodil with 2 Corinthians 5:17 - "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation."

The other night, I had what I thought was just 15 minutes available to paint while my husband stayed back to get the kids to sleep. Usually with that much time available, I wouldn’t bother to take everything out, but I really wanted to paint! It had been a couple days since I’d had time, so I decided to see how much I could get done in 15 minutes. Could I create something worth while in that much time?

Hand Lettered Daffodil with 2 Corinthians 5:17 - "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation."

As it turns out, I had more like 30 minutes, so it was definitely worth it. I was able to get all the paint laid down for this daffodil! I started it without a sketch. When all you have is 15-30 minutes and no projects in the works, there isn’t time to sketch (okay, there could be, but I didn’t take the time).

It was fun! I started by laying down a light yellow in a daffodil shape. I messed it up, so I made it bigger. 🙂 Problem solved. Now the top petal was cut off, so in the end, when trimming it to size, I decided to trim the side petal too. I like the way it turned out.

Next I dabbed some orange on to the wet paint (that is called a wet on wet technique) and it crawled around wherever it wanted to go. I picked up the paper and tilted it here and there to encourage it to go where I wanted, but it doesn’t have to play by my rules.

Once it was dry I added the green stem and leaves (so the color wouldn’t bleed where they touch).

The next day, I added all the pen work and lettering.

Hand Lettered Daffodil with 2 Corinthians 5:17 - "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation."

My favorite part is the lettering. From the beginning I pictured the words of the verse following the shape of the flower and I really like the way it turned out.

I choose 2 Corinthians 5:17 from my list of memorized verses on Bible Memory (our family’s favorite way to memorize and meditate on Scripture! Free for the first 50 verses and well worth the trial. It makes learning and practicing Bible verses easy and fun!) (That was not a paid plug… we just really love them!)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

I thought it was a beautiful verse for spring, with all the new life around us. Truly, the old of the world died back over winter, and now the new creation is springing up all around us! And just the same way, when we choose to repent of our sins and follow Jesus, we are new creations in Him, our old selves dead and left behind us! Thank you Father for making me new!

Empty Tomb Watercolor Card for Easter – Hand Lettered Matthew 28:6

Update March 2022: An updated version of this artwork is available on my Etsy Shop for instant download.

Empty Tomb Watercolor Card for Easter - Hand Lettered Matthew 28:6

Last year I shared an empty tomb illustration from my art journal, but I was wanting to do something like it again. This time, I selected Matthew 28:6, “He is not here, for he is risen!”

Empty Tomb Watercolor Card for Easter - Hand Lettered Matthew 28:6

I wanted to add some color this time, so you’ve got grass and a flower. When the bunny idea hopped (see what I did there?) into my head, I just couldn’t help myself. I love that it looks like he’s bending his head over to see inside. It’s exactly what I envisioned. That doesn’t happen very often. 🙂

Get Away to the Mountains – Women’s Retreat Decor

Another in the line up of women’s retreat decor. I love the play on words that this one holds. It sound so rude, doesn’t it. Get Away! Like it’s being yelled. But then, too, it has the “get away to the mountains” feel to it. But my favorite is the verse at the bottom:

“Jesus went out to the mountain to pray.”
Luke 6:12

One of the things I am most looking forward to about this women’s retreat is the chance to “Get Away”. There are 6 little people at home with me all day, every day. And I love them. And I love that we are here every day together. But… I love a chance to get alone with God and spend some real, uninterrupted time with him.

And that is what I hope this piece reminds the ladies of. To take some time away from sessions and games and fellowship and just get away by themselves in much the same way that Jesus did here.

Keep in step with the Spirit – Decor with a Message

Get going... in step with the Spirit - Galatians 5:25

Our retreat theme is Cozy Mountain Lodge, so I’m trying to keep in the attitude of mountains and outdoors and all. But I’m also trying to tie it back to the God who made it all and to His Word and it’s application in our lives.

So here I have the attitude of hiking in the mountains (at least it’s what I was going for) with Galatians 5:25: “Keep in step with the Spirit.”

Get going... in step with the Spirit - Galatians 5:25

This passage is one that has become dear to me. Galatians 5:24 and verse 25.

“And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also
keep in step with the Spirit.”

You see, I have a struggle with sin. Anyone else?

These days, among others, I’m struggling with gluttony and self control. But these verses were both convicting and encouraging to me when I came across them in my reading some time ago (not that I am done struggling with this self gratification thing). If I belong to Christ (and I do), my flesh has been crucified with its passions and desires. That not only means that I should be making better decisions, but that those passions and desires have already been put to death.

Yet, we so often live with them unchecked. That’s is where verse 25 is so great! “If we live by the faith…”, that’s what we do when we choose faith in Jesus Christ for forgiveness from our sins, then “let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

This part means that we should be making decision that keep us walking in the Spirit (talking to Him regularly, reading his Word, memorizing it and meditating on it.) When we do this, the other things (our desires and passions) seem to “keep in step” with Him too.

Have you ever spent time meditating on these verses?

Born for Adventure – Nursery Art

A couple months ago, my girls and I were blessed to attend a baby shower for a gal who grew up in our church. I asked the grandmother-to-be what the nursery theme was going to be for the coming baby boy and what she told me made me laugh. Apparently, it depended who you asked.

Mom-to-be said “outdoors”, dad-to-be said “airplanes”.

“But,” she continued, “the general consensus is ‘adventure’.”

Adventure I can do, I thought.

Before I designed my Born for Adventure Hot Air Balloons, I’d been working on the same idea with mountains. And trees. And a river that comes out from between them. Sound familiar?

Why, yes, that is exactly what the above painting looks like. I already had the sketch, I just finished it up, transferred it to watercolor paper, added the watercolor and the verse. And it was done!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I found out about this shower 1 week before it. It was sure handy that I already had the design worked out, or I may not have had anything hand painted to bring. And that would have been super sad! 🙂

God's Got This - Hand Lettered Artwork - Joshua 1:9

Last year I invited myself onto the women’s retreat planning committee and appointed myself the decorating coordinator. (Then I appointed my mom as my helper, but that is another story for another day.) Last year our theme was “Sweet Life Cafe” with all it’s sweets and coffee loveliness. I had fun painting and hand lettering all sorts of fun cafe themed artwork.

This year, the leadership for the retreat changed and it was even easier for me to force my way into the best committee role there is. I’m so glad that all the other ladies have adverse reactions the idea of decorating such an event. It works out in my favor!

God's Got This - Hand Lettered Artwork - Joshua 1:9

This year’s theme is Cozy Mountain Lodge from Group. Now that Christmas is over, I’ve officially begun working on it. This is the first of the artwork I have planned. I love taking something mainstream and tweaking it.

I’m picturing this on a food table or as part of the centerpiece. We’ll see when we get there.

A Hand lettered Verse for Fall — Proverbs 25:11

I like to decorate my house for fall, but often times, I’m itching to decorate before it’s really fall-ish around here.  (This year especially, it was still hot until the end of September last week.)

So what’s a girl to do?  I use that in-between time for apples.  They don’t really match the pumpkins and leaves anyway.  And I’m all about matching.

"A Word Fitly Spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver." - Proverbs 25:11 Hand lettered

So… when it came to finding something “apple-ish” to put in my little clipboard frame, I just had to make something new.

Proverbs 25:11 is what I came up with.

These are a couple other little decorated spaces. My 10 year old brought me some of the flowers she grew this year.  They match too.

And I painted the fresh baked pie right onto wood in watercolor.  (You just have to treat it first if you want to try it yourself.)

He is the God of Hope – Illustrated Verse Romans 15:13

The God of Hope Illustrated Verse - Romans 15:13

I mentioned that I had the opportunity to pray with a couple ladies a couple Sundays ago and it was a beautiful morning.

The service ended and everyone started to bustle around.  We gathered our things and I looked around at the people passing by.  Then a lady I haven’t talked to in many months came walking by.

A small hug. Some chit chat. Then the question, “How are you guys?”  Her answer was real.

“We’re doing okay,” she said with a little hesitation that told me “okay” was coming only by God’s grace.  Then, “but it’s been hard.  We’ve been going through some hurtful things.”

I didn’t know.  I still don’t.  But I asked her if I could pray with her right there, standing in the middle of the sanctuary with people buzzing around us.  And she said yes.

I prayed.  She cried.  And I knew I’d obeyed God’s call on my heart to minister to His people that morning.

The God of Hope Illustrated Verse - Romans 15:13

When the time came to design a card for her, I chose Romans 15:13.  He is the God of hope who is able to fill you with all joy and peace… no matter the season or trials you are walking through!

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing

so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

Romans 15:13
