2023 Mini Illustrated Old Truck Calendar

Did you see my Mini Chicken Calendar and love it, but not care so much about the chickens? I hear you. Chickens aren’t for everybody. And while trucks aren’t for everybody, I know that a bunch of you do love old trucks! I hope you love this little calendar with all their whimsical illustrations just as much!

I love to tie these little cuties (mini size) onto a package or plate of cookies for a Christmas gift. It’s what I’m doing for our pastors’ wives again this year. The first year I included a mini easel from Hobby Lobby. They make a great stocking stuffer too and fit perfectly. If you prefer the larger sizes, place them in a frame and switch them out, clip them to the fridge, or slide them in the front of your school binder! So many options!

Whether they are for you or for gift giving (both?), you can find them in my Etsy shop right now!

What do you think? Do you like them? Which month is your favorite. Tell me in the comments!

Carrot Patch Sign

With spring officially begun, we are full into the beginning of garden season! How better to celebrate, than with a cute Carrot Patch sign!

Carrot Patch Sign | mamasbrush
Farmhouse decor for your homestead, farm or garden loving spring home. Gift to gardeners or for Easter!

This is the part of the year that I still like gardening. Ask me again come July or August when it’s too hot to be outside and the weeds and pests have taken over and my opinion is often different. But for now… for now I’m all about the planning and the prepping and the seed starting. Yes, and even the decorating!

So… I designed this cute sign specifically for my sister who is loving all things carrots these days! I wanted to have something for her when she arrived for her visit this week, but I couldn’t help but print myself one and frame it up! It’s sitting on my kitchen counter waiting for me to figure out a good place for it. 🙂 I couldn’t stop there, though! I’ve also added it to my Etsy shop so you can have a copy too!

My sign reads, “Welcome to our Carrot Patch”, but my sister lives alone, so that isn’t going to work for her. Hers says ,”Welcome to my Carrot Patch.”

I designed this sign both ways, so, whether you need this sign in your family home or want to use it in your own space, I’ve got you covered! This sign would be great framed as an 8×10 or 5×7 on an entry table or in a dorm room, or framed as an 11×14 on the mantle in your living room. You can also choose to print the pdf of the 8.5×11 size to put in the front cover of your homestead, household, or school notebook!

How would you use it?

Discount time… As always, during this first week in the shop, I want you to have 33% off if you would like to buy one of these Carrot Patch Signs for your home. Enter coupon code CARROTS33 at checkout, or just follow one of these links to have it automatically taken during these first 7 days!

Keep records in style with these new forms!

This project has been a long time coming, and a lot of original artwork was created to make these extra special! I’ve been wanting to create these Egg Counting Sheets for a few years (ever since I made one for for the month of April a few years back), and the drawing tablet I got for my birthday last fall was just the push I needed! I’ve been working on them for several months and I’m super excited to have them done and ready for your farm or homestead needs!

Click here to find them in my Etsy shop!

UPDATE 2023: You can also find these egg counting sheets in my Whole Coop Chicken Mega Bundle with my other chicken products. Click here to find that.

Each page has chicken themed artwork that matches the season. You may recognize the chickens from a fabric design I shared lately (available for sale here.) The chickens from that fabric were originally from these egg counting sheets.

You can keep track of how many eggs you collect each day, any expenses from the month and your gross and net sales (if you sell your eggs.) There is also a section for writing any notes about your chickens or things you need to do or buy.

My Fabric Design For Sale

Chickens and Trucks Fabric Design | mamasbrush #oldtruck #farmhouse #chickens #fabric #surfacepatterndesign #pastelchickens

Chickens and Trucks is a fabric design I entered into the Spoonflower Challenge this last week. I am really happy with the way it turned out. We were supposed to use those three colors in our designs. I struggled with what to do until my husband suggested the trucks. I had a really cute design I was happy with, but I was getting mixed reviews from the family. It was my husband, again, who challenged me to push a little further.

I had these chickens from another project so I started to play with the colors. Who would think of making pink and green and purple chickens? I kept working with it. At first I was just going to do the chickens, but then it occurred to me that I could use both the chickens and the trucks… and “Chickens and Trucks” was born! I was super excited to see that people seemed to like it as well and I placed at #66 this week! See it on “real products” here.

I’m thrilled to announce that Chickens and Trucks is now available for purchase in my Spoonflower shop!

Apples – Pick Your Own Fall Sign | Hand Lettered and Painted Free Printable

I love love love these printable signs I found over at Clean and Scentsible! I pinned my favorites here. (And that towel… you’ll have to go look. It’s too cute!)

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I tend to steer toward the farmhouse style decor… at least on Pinterest, and these cute signs planted a seed in me to make my own version of them. I just couldn’t let many days go by before I just had to try it with an apple theme. I generally decorate with apples in September. It’s not quite fall, but I’m itching for it to be… apples seem to be a happy medium before my leaves and pumpkins come out at the end of the month.

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I started by sketching this one out. It’s not a “no-sketch” by any means. There were too many elements to get just right. I suppose if you wanted to “no-sketch” it, you could always scan each element in individually and put it together in Photoshop… but I didn’t do that this time. 🙂

I love the look of all the farmhouse signs I see, but when it comes time to buy or make one for myself, I can’t make myself do it. Something always seems to be missing. First of all, I wanted to add a verse to it somehow, but I also wanted to make it more personal. I felt like putting “family farm” at the top fit us better since that’s what we pretend to be. Then I loved how “pick your own” fit the attitude of encouraging the children to help out and take initiative.

Pick Your Own Fall Apples | Free Printable with hand lettered Colossians 3:23

I tried a new watercolor paper this time around. Hot pressed. It’s much smoother and [hopefully] easier to scan and clean up in Photoshop for you all. Shayda recently did a video that talks about the differences in watercolor paper, so I was ready for it to be different. It definitely was different, and it will take some practice, but I think it worked out nicely. Nothing you should be afraid to try for sure. The main reason I decided to try it is that Eileen at My Creative Resolution mentioned in a post (no idea which one… sorry!) that the texture of watercolor paper is hard on artist pens. It was at that moment I understood why my pens never seem to last long! 🙂 An ah-ha moment to be sure! The smooth finish of the hot pressed paper should help them to last longer. And it does scan much nicer!

I know there are already so many fall printables out there, but I don’t often see these seasonal printables with Bible verses on them, so I want to share them with you in the off chance that any of you are still in the market for a cute apple themed fall printable or have been holding out for one with a verse. Click here to download it and visit my slowly growing printables page for more!

Farm Girl Diaper Cake – Every Baby Needs a Party

Okay, you’ve heard me say it before: I’m a firm believer that every baby needs a party, and this little farm girl is no exception. Three older brothers already inhabiting the family’s homestead (plus rabbits and chickens), we really had to do something in pink!

Farm Girl Diaper Cake - Every Baby Needs a Party

Our church budgets for throwing a baby shower for all the first born babies, and I am the one so blessed as to be in charge of most of those. I understand that there isn’t room in the budget for every baby to have a full blown party, and it isn’t in our budget either. And I understand that not everyone thinks that second and third (and forth and fifth, etc) babies need a party. But I disagree!

When I say that every baby needs a party, I do not mean that we need to break the budget each time a baby is born or throw some elaborate gathering. What I do mean is that we should celebrate each new baby as the gift from God that they are! (I feel the same way about every adoption too by the way!) Every baby is special to the family receiving him or her, and it’s my joy to make a point to celebrate with that family… and to make sure they know about it!

Farm Girl Diaper Cake - Every Baby Needs a Party

A number of years ago, after years of wishing something could be done for all these *not first born* babies, I had a couple ideas. First of all, what if we just set up a table and invite the church family to bring gifts for the new baby. So that’s what I do anytime a new baby is born in our church. It’s not hard, and most of the time the decorations are super simple. This time it was a table cloth, a diaper cake (made at home), and a banner. It will be up for a few Sundays to give time for people to bring in their gifts.

{Planning to share my second “idea” about how to celebrate new babies in an upcoming post… subscribe in the sidebar so you don’t miss it!}

Farm Girl Diaper Cake - Every Baby Needs a Party
Usually I put the new family picture where the family drawing is, but I replaced it to give the family their privacy! 🙂 [Artwork is NOT mine]

A week or so before it is up, I send out an email “invitation” to the whole church that is made in the same theme as the table. We call it a sprinkling. Most people bring diapers and wipes, but there are a few people who bring other gifts, gift cards, or a personal quilt. Gifts don’t even have to be wrapped… it’s optional.

Farm Girl Diaper Cake - Every Baby Needs a Party

I found the inspiration for this diaper cake on Pinterest (of course). Then I increased the size of the clipart I used in the invitation and printed it off. Some extra details from the dollar store, fabric store and around the house took it over the top. It turned out really cute (I think!)

Farm Girl Diaper Cake - Every Baby Needs a Party

Does your church do anything when babies are born??? It’s really easy to start this ministry… and it’s one that blesses families time and again!!

Keep a look out for the other thing I do for families to celebrate the birth of their new babies! (You can subscribe in the sidebar so you don’t miss a post!)

Old MacDonald’s Farm Birthday Theme

Just after Thanksgiving, one of my little guys turned 5. He wanted a tractor birthday… but not a construction tractor, a farm tractor. And if he had anything to say about it, there should be a barn and a pig. Well… I had to see what I could do.

I try to do a little painting to go along with the theme of each birthday. The kids love them and have come to expect them.

I think this was my first pig. And barn and tractor and hay pile actually. I was pretty happy with them. I love that art can be art even when it’s not perfect. But I’m pretty sure my son thought it was perfect.

Hint: if you are just starting out, make stuff for your kids. They will think you are great even if you don’t! 🙂

For example… the cake. While structurally sound, it’s not the most attractive cake I’ve attempted. But, except that it was supposed to have a man on it (who went missing at the last minute) and that the cow was “supposed” to be in front of the barn (my bad), he thought it was great!

Breakfast and dinner went much better. Missing from this post is the pic of “pigs in mud” (baked beans and dogs) that we had for dinner. A nice and simple meal.

And there you have it… our Old MacDonald Birthday.

More Bullet Journal Pages for the Farm

***Updated June 2022: I have new garden harvest/journal pages available!  Check out my post about them here, or hop over to my shop to find them!

Bullet Journal Title Page for my Farm Journal

I considered waiting until I have a complete finished collection of bullet journal pages to share all at once, but I realize that it may never happen.  So… here are a few more.  This is the cover page in my farm journal.  I’m new to illustrating with markers, so I was afraid of tackling the radishes with them.  Especially accomplishing the gradient, but I’m super happy with how it turned out. It’s crisp, clean, plenty of negative space, and yet some of that deliberate messy.  It just makes me happy!

And yes, those are my kids markers.  It doesn’t have to be fancy to be fun!

Brooder Log for Baby Chicks
My 10 year old assured me that water is NOT blue.  When I stepped back to look at it, I decided she’s right.  Oh well.

This page sits beside my Egg Tracker.  It’s basically a brooder log.  We purchased some chicks from Tractor Supply a week and a half ago to replenish our laying flock (some of our chickens are almost 4 years… that’s ancient for laying hens as far as productivity goes) and as soon as we can diy an incubator, we’ll be incubating some meat chickens.  Hopefully we’ll do several batches this spring/summer.  With all those babies and all the different start dates and ages and details, I wanted a way to organize it all.  That said, we’ve never really done this before, so I don’t know what organizational method will be best, so I decided to start with a log.  This one may just be for March, or it may spill over and I’ll just make new pages when I need them.

Garden Layout Page in my Farm Bullet Journal

And this is the back half of my garden plan.  It shows about 50 feet across by 25ish feet back.  Hopefully I’ll have the front half and our property layout done for you soon so you can visualize everything a bit better.  I left the plants in pencil, even though I really want to draw in each individual plant for a nice pretty garden illustration, but so many things could change and I have things so tightly packed together in permiculture/companion planting style, that I decided not to.  One of my future pages will include a plant list with dates to know and remember, so you’ll see my plans more then.

I also included Hebrews 6:7, “For Land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated receives a blessing.”  I know it is referencing our hearts, but I love the relation to gardening and the reminder of how God uses the every day of His creation to talk to our hearts.

You’ll also notice that my sketches from one side to the other are different.  I did these up on graph paper weeks ago and apparently one of them is off.  I decided not to redo them though.  Who has time for that.  Release the perfectionism and move on.  I would not be doing a bullet journal at all if I was going to try to have a perfect one.  I wouldn’t get anything done actually.  Perfectionism is the enemy of accomplishment.  That’s what I say anyway.
